Room to Recalibrate
Staff sanctuary, hospital interior design conceptualisation

What does a hospital owe the people who spend their days caring for others?

The request was for space set apart for staff: a calm sanctuary where they could step away from the intensity of the ward, recover, meet one another and recalibrate before returning to their work. The design began with that idea of a pause, and with the understanding that the environment people rest in shapes how fully they can recover.

The space balances solitude with company. Quieter corners offer privacy and stillness, while softer areas invite colleagues to gather and talk. Natural materials and textures, a gentle tonal palette and layered, low-glare lighting reduce the sensory demands of a clinical day, and a connection to daylight and to nature, wherever the building allows, supports a sense of calm and orientation.

Materials were chosen to be warm, durable and easy to care for, meeting the practical demands of a healthcare setting without feeling institutional. Acoustics, privacy and comfort were considered together, so that the room feels like a refuge rather than another part of the workplace.

The result is a place that tells staff they are valued: a quiet, restorative room where people can pause, connect and gather themselves, and return to their work supported.
